Sing You Home: A Novel

From the award-winning, number one New York Times best-selling author whom USA Today calls a "master of the page-turner" comes the spectacular story of a woman's complex quest to form a family.Â

Every life has a soundtrack. All you have to do is listen.Â

Music has set the tone for most of Zoe Baxter's life. There's the melody that reminds her of the summer she spent rubbing baby oil on her stomach in pursuit of the perfect tan. A dance beat that makes her think of using a fake ID to slip into a nightclub. A dirge that marked the years she spent trying to get pregnant.Â

For better or for worse, music is the language of memory. It is also the language of love.Â

In the aftermath of a series of personal tragedies, Zoe throws herself into her career as a music therapist. When an unexpected friendship slowly blossoms into love, she makes plans for a new life, but to her shock and inevitable rage, some people - even those she loves and trusts most - don't want that to happen.Â

Sing You Home is about identity, love, marriage, and parenthood. It's about people wanting to do the right thing for the greater good, even as they work to fulfill their own personal desires and dreams. And it's about what happens when the outside world brutally calls into question the very thing closest to our hearts: family. Â

I cannot believe I waited a year for this book, preordered it, read it in a day and had to wait 3 days to review it because I did not know what to write. I felt cheated by this storyline and its characters. This book is not up to the standards I expect from Jodi Picoult. Why? Because I could not believe Jodi Picoult could turn out such one dimensional, flat, stereotypical characters in a flimsy, uninteresting storyline. Where is the author of "My Sister's Keeper" or "Plain Truth"? Yes, those were controversial storylines and characters, but they packed a punch. Perhaps it is just too predictable when reading a Picoult book? Granted, she has a bestseller formula (as I am sure she will this time)but it is still formula writing. The POV told from 3 to 4 primary characters' chapters,(throw in a couple of interesting minor characters such as the attorney and Zoe's mother), wrap it around combustive subject matter, add a trial and end with a two page epilogue that ties everything up with a bow. *************Spoilers*************I expect a well researched subject from Jodi, but not direct quotes from medical journals. The sensitive, emotionally turbulent subject of infertility was only lightly explored. In reality, would someone deeply involved with fertility issues be so blase about any physical trauma at 28 weeks, when the baby is borderline viable? Zoe's stillborn son resulted in Max abruptly leaving her without much insight. Zoe and Vanessa's relationship jumps quickly to the altar. Did Vanessa even want to be a mother before Zoe? Did Zoe subconsciously pick someone who could carry her embryos to term with Vanessa being easily available? Was Max really that quickly swayed to pick his brother, Reid, and wife, Liddy to be the parents? It was not until Max and Liddy had a hot encounter in the kitchen that Max ever doubted his uncle role in his biological child's life. The Max/Liddy sudden love was contrived. The ultra right-wing, publicity-seeking lawyers/religious leaders were easy pickings as the 'Bad Guys'. Unbelievably, I found the multi-dimensional aspects surrounding infertility, lesbian relationships and Right Wing Religion to be extremely predictable and boring. ************End of Spoilers**********I believe Jodi's ultimate message is "families come in many shapes and sizes that cannot be determined by shared DNA alone". I most heartily agree with that sentiment and practice it in my private life. It is just a shame Jodi Picoult turned it into this boring book.I have purchased all of her books in the past, it is just future purchases that I will avoid.

I haven't finished the book yet. Jodi Picoult is a favorite of mine. My complaint is this...why is the Kindle version more than the hardcover version. I could have had the book sent to me for free for cheaper than it cost to send it to my Kindle. I love my Kindle but I hope Amazon doesn't start overcharging for popular titles. I have "sold" many Kindles by word of mouth. I am a hairdresser and talk to men and women all day. Most are readers and thinking of purchasing some form of e-reader. The thing that makes the Kindle stand out over the Nook is the availability of affordable and sometimes free books. Will update my review after I finish the book. The 3 stars are because I couldnt leave it blank.

What Jodi Picoult does well, she does REALLY well. Her novels never fail to pull the heart strings, open the mind and capture the reader from word one. Her talents cannot be denied and should not be underestimated. Picoult is no weakling when it comes to being the heavy in terms of hot bed topics. She just grabs whatever is making waves and weaves a story that, yes, leaves a mark on the reader.I devoured this book, as I do with everything Picoult publishes (minus the comic book things she tried that left me scratching my head...I passed on that one). I won't hash into what the book's about, clearly you can gather that information from the 8 other reviews and, of course, the synopsis. But I will say this book follows the Picoult-formula to a T...heavy topic, likable and unlikeable characters, court drama, a last minute loop followed up with a happy ending. Picoult doesn't depart from the tried and true, so this title deserves a full 4 stars based on the story, not the originality. In today's word people are often lead by misnomers passed down from generation to generation, some as old as the Scripture itself. That, in a sentence, is this novel. What Picoult does really well here is open the eyes of her readers, and by doing so, opens their hearts. The topic of same sex marriage hits the nightly news religiously (no pun intended) and her take on that, bringing it home and making it real for the reader regardless of his/her own personal experience, is something EVERYONE should read--regardless of which side you fall on. Mix that up with a little infertility on both sides of issue and you'll be as compulsive as I to find what really defines a "happy ending" for everyone.So...I'll leave it at that. This book is worth it, every little penny. You won't walk away disappointed, heck you may even walk away a little changed and lot more informed. On a side note: I bought this title on my Kindle and ergo missed the accompanying CD, so if you're going to miss that, buy the hardcover.

As others have said, this is a novel of blacks and whites--not a gray in sight. Hence, the characters seem like cardboard cutouts that the author moves around the landscape to suit her will. In prior Picoult books (with the exception of the one before this, which I didn't even finish), the characters run wild with the story. Not here, where Picoult's is the only voice we hear. There is a CD that was enclosed with my library book. In the front matter of the book, Picoult says that she wrote the lyrics of the enclosed songs to go along with the chapters so that readers could experience Zoe's emotions in musical form. I would have preferred to experience them in written form, which is why I bothered to read the book in the first place. Truth is, Zoe is so uninteresting a character to me that I don't have any inclination to extend our "relationship" through music.

I tried to purchase this book for my kindle and it is not available for the regular kindle. I am so extremely disappointed. I wanted to read this book in the worst way and after much frustration found out it is only available for Ipad, Iphone users! When I purchased my kindle I thought it was the greatest thing; now I can't even get books I want to read!
